Dr. Maria Clay was named Chair of the Department of Bioethics and Interdisciplinary Studies (formerly the Department of Medical Humanities) in July 2010. She served as Interim Chair of the department since October 2007. She received her doctorate in Adult Education and Organizational Development from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1990. Dr. Clay came to ECU in 1991 in the Department of Family Medicine.

Dr. Clay is Professor, Department of Bioethics & Interdisciplinary Studies, adjunct professor in the Department of Public Health and the College of Education, Director of Clinical Skills Assessment and Education, and Co-Director of the Office of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Education. She teaches M2 Society, Culture and Health Systems, and Interdisciplinary Rural Health courses for the IRHE and Master’s in Public Health programs.
